5th Time is a Charm

I find myself falling into that trap. I told myself not to get excited about this fight until it actually happens. Yet I find myself bursting with excitement more than a month out. On April 18th Khabib Nurmagomedov is scheduled to take on Tony Ferguson. This is the 5th time it’s been scheduled, each fighter pulled out twice. It’s as if the MMA universe doesn’t want these guys to fight. All I can say is I’m hoping the 5th times a charm

Khabib is a beast. His standup isn’t terrible, but it’s in his best interest to get this fight to the ground. Tony isn’t afraid of being taken down, though. That’s what makes this matchup so compelling. Tony definitely has more ways to win. I think the ground would favor Khabib, but I can’t be sure until I see it. Ferguson could certainly pull off a submission, he’ll be going for that D’arce choke on all takedown attempts. Tony will also be willing to put himself in those compromising positions that most guys try to avoid to land some good shots. The fight clearly favors Tony on the feet. Which would lead me to believe that Ferguson has a slight edge in this contest. However, nobody is better at implementing his strategy than Khabib. Everybody knows what’s coming and nobody has been able to stop it. Khabib brings an undefeated record for a reason.

That press conference was gold. Tony is clearly under Khabib’s skin, but I’m not sure that’s the best strategy. Tony even made light of angering Khabib during the presser. Conor pressed Khabib’s buttons and made him very angry before their fight and look what happened. I don’t think poking the bear is the best idea in the case of Khabib Nurmagomedov. While I keep going back and forth on this one, I have to give the edge to Khabib here. He’s merely unstoppable, and I think he’ll wear Tony down throughout this fight. Tony does have the right amount of crazy to get it done, though. Man, oh man, am I excited for this one! It just has to happen this time.
