The first installment of the legendary franchise offers the most compelling story in the entire saga as an unlikely hero gets called to action when his life is turned upside down. A young Luke Skywalker is unaware of the dangers that lie ahead when his uncle Owen purchases a couple of run-down droids. He discovers a hidden message inside one of them, which compels him to seek out Obi-Wan Kenobi. Luke’s home planet of Tatooine seems like a terrifying place to have grown up with those red-eyed sand people always lurking about. Boom! Luke is attacked and left lying unconscious, only to be discovered by a hooded Obi-Wan Kenobi. The first half-hour of this movie is loaded with action and information that sets up the entire Skywalker Saga.

Han Solo makes a great complimentary hero to Luke Skywalker. He definitely seems more concerned with his own interests than helping out a helpless Princess. But hey, money talks. And, eventually, we all learn that Han really is a great guy. He’s just seen enough of the Empire’s evil deeds and has no faith in hokey religions. Princess Leia makes her strong presence known as she swipes Luke’s blaster and leads her rescuers directly into the garbage chute. Well… somebody had to save their skins! This movie is filled with great action as its cast of characters encounter one dangerous problem after another. The interactions between Artoo and C3PO are truly unforgettable.

This film does a great job of depicting Darth Vader as the ultimate supervillain. He has an overpowering presence and unique abilities never seen on the screen before. His legendary breathing and formidable force choking abilities are absolutely terrifying. When Vader vanquishes Obi-Wan, it seems like our young heroes are inevitably doomed, which reinforces why this movie has the best display of pure storytelling in the entire franchise. It’s the most unpredictable. Luke is a mere boy that isn’t ready to challenge the terrifying Vader. Han is more interested in saving his own skin than challenging the Empire. It has the most original finish with the dramatic conclusion coming when Luke destroys the Death Star flying a spaceship. The special effects are outdated, but this movie is great fun and a terrific way to kick off this great franchise!
