Hello everyone and happy Saturday. Once again, I hope you are all staying healthy and safe. Today, I want to talk about what I think is the most important thing about becoming a writer. In my opinion, it is first being a reader.
My wife and I both like to read. I’m more into Stephen King, Star Wars, and classic tales like Dracula or Frankenstein. My wife likes a wide variety of genres including romance and crime books, and also a lot of the same stuff I happen to like. Probably why we click so well while working together.
Now, we obviously don’t lift ideas from other writers, but there is no doubt that those authors influenced our work. In fact, I had a friend tell me one time that his mother thought our style reminded her of a young Stephen King, which is one of the biggest compliments I could receive.
I think reading helps because it opens your mind to these other worlds. You start traveling with characters in books and then start thinking of your own group of travelers to go with. Then you put them in their own world, and then give them their own problem to solve. It’s a wonderful, organic process if you do it right. That is why I believe reading, and understanding what makes a good story good, are the first steps in becoming an author.
That’s just my opinion, but I think it’s sound advice. So if you are an author, and your struggling with your next move, pick up a book for a little while. It’s a great way to step out of your world and maybe come back to it with a fresh idea. I hope you guys give it a try this week, and I’ll be back next week. Keep reading and staying healthy.
