Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Monday Star Wars Talk. Today, I would like to continue my favorite character countdown. Today’s post will focus on arguably the most recognizable character in the saga, Darth Vader.
Vader is an imposing figure, introduced to us as the villain of the story. Despite having minimal screen time in the original, Vader manages to stay front and center in the viewer’s minds. His story becomes something bigger than expected in the Empire Strikes Back, when he reveals he is Luke Skywalker’s father. This changes the way we see Vader, as he becomes the central character of the saga once the prequels reveal his history. This leads to his redemption in the final film of George Lucas’ story, with the love of his son paving the way. It’s a powerful cinematic moment.
Star Wars teaches a lot of lessons, and one of those lessons is learning from one’s failure. Vader is the ultimate example of a character not learning from his failure. He is our guide, showing us what happens when we continually ignore the warning signs of situations around us. As the Chosen One, he should have been the most powerful character in the saga. Because of his choices, however, he is reduced to becoming a shadow of what he could have been. Despite that, he’s a cool character that we can’t help but like, even if he is the bad guy. That’s part of his charm. And, I think, the story of his redemption appeals to us because it shows us that there is good in everyone. Even those that appear to be too far gone.
Well that’s my post for this week. Let me know what you think and I’ll talk to you all again next week. Until then…….
